PROVO, Utah — Oklahoma State backup quarterback Zane Flores will not play this season as a result of a lower leg injury that required surgery this week, a source has told The Oklahoman.
Flores did not accompany the Oklahoma State football team on its trip for the BYU game, initially reported by OSU sideline reporter Robert Allen on his radio show Friday morning.
The Cowboys face No. 13 BYU at 9:15 p.m. Friday at LaVell Edwards Stadium, with redshirt sophomore Garret Rangel expected to be the starting quarterback.
The 6-foot-4, 215-pound Flores has yet to appear in a game since arriving at OSU last year. He redshirted last year and was expected to serve as a backup to starter Alan Bowman this season.
Bowman has struggled, resulting in his benching in two of the last three games, and now the shift to Rangel as the starter.
Flores is expected to be fully healthy for spring practice next year, when he, Rangel and true freshman Maealiuaki Smith will begin the competition to be OSU’s starter in 2025.
