ALEXANDRIA, VA-Located in the Belle View Shopping Center, Jess Purtell Yoga opened its doors today (Nov. 1). The timing is perfect for owner Jess Purtell, who has outgrown her basement-based yoga studio that she started in 2019.

Purtell is a familiar face to many in the area, having taught yoga at various studios throughout Alexandria. She lives in nearby Hollin Hills, and volunteers at the local Hollin Hall Senior Center teaching chair yoga once a week. Having a local space to call her own, this 1,240 square-foot space is a dream come true for her. Situated between Roy Rogers and GOLFTEC, the space was previously occupied by Wine & Design Painting Studio.

Having taken an eight-week beginner workshop with Purtell, I can attest her love and passion for her students. She caters her teaching to each individual’s wants and needs and has a true calling for teaching.

Purtell feels that all her experience has been leading her up to this point of owning her own studio. She just needed a push to get herself out there and this space will do that for her. She says many studio owners get wrapped up in the business and stop teaching, but that is not what she intends to do. “I don’t want to stop teaching,” she said. “I love teaching; I’m meant to do this.”

Stepping into the new yoga space, it’s evident that she has a lot of knowledge and created an environment she wants for her business, even down to the quality of the yoga mats. There is an enormous TV and cameras that follow the teacher throughout the class, so each of the classes can be recorded and livestreamed on the business’ recently launched app. The studio offers over 22 live classes, an extensive library of over 400 on-demand classes, as well as one-on-one sessions (some with Purtell herself). There are presently eight instructors who will be teaching yoga and Pilates classes for all, regardless of skill level.

The owner and her 13-year-old daughter will continue teaching, once a month, a family class for caregivers and children ages 3-9. She will also offer one free community class per month.

Purtell earned her yoga certification in 2010 and has over 8,000 hours of teaching experience. She is an E-RYT 500 (Experienced Yoga Teacher) and YACEP certified (Yoga Alliance Continuing Education Provider), as well as a Balanced Body Pilates Mat instructor.
