Port Clinton, Ohio – Senior Mia Avotins (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) tied for 28th place to lead the Le Moyne College women’s golf team to a 10th-place finish at the Rocket Classic hosted by the University of Toledo at the par-72, 5979-yard Catawba Island Club.
The University of Ohio won the team competition with a three-round total of 906 after scores of 309, 302 and 295. The University of Akron was second with rounds of 309, 296 and 304 for a 909 total. The host Rockets were one shot back in third after scores of 297, 304 and 309. The Dolphins finished with a 980, their second-best 54-hole score in the program’s history, following rounds of 325, 334 and 321. Ohio’s Mackenzie McRee earned medalist honors with a 221 off rounds of 76, 72 and 73.
Avotins finished in a three-way tie for 28th with a 234, the second-best 54-hole score in the program’s history, after recording three birdies and 33 pars. She opened with a 79, which featured 12 pars, to land in a four-way tie for 28th place. After another 79 in the second round, including 12 more pars, she was in a three-way tie for 28th. She carded a 76, featuring three birdies and nine pars, on Tuesday to finish a three-round event with a trio of rounds in the 70s for the first time.
Sophomore Gianna Cafarella (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Preparatory School) tallied a career-best 245, which included two birdies and 29 pars, to place 42nd. She opened with an 84, including 10 pars, to tie for 49th place. She followed with another 84, with one birdie and seven pars, to dip one spot in the standings. She closed out the invitational with a 77, including one birdie and 12 pars, to jump eight places.
Freshman Lauren Williams (San Francisco, Calif./University HS) placed 50th with a 251, which featured one birdie and 25 pars. She posted an 82 in the first round, including a birdie and eight pars, to land in a six-way tie for 42nd. In the afternoon, she recorded an 84, which featured eight pars, to move into a tie for 46th place. She capped the event with an 85, which included nine pars.
Freshman Olivia Dahn (Bristol, Conn./St. Paul Catholic) was one spot back after tallying a 257, which included two birdies and 24 pars. She was in seven-way tie for 32nd place after an 80 in the first round, which featured 12 pars. She slipped to 53rd with a 94 in the second 18, which included one birdie and four pars. She registered an 83, featuring one birdie and eight pars, on Tuesday to move up two positions.
Junior Riley Stuver (Webster, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) finished 55th with a 263, which featured one birdie and 19 pars. She carded an opening-round 88, which included seven pars. She improved by one shot in the second round, which featured seven more pars. She followed with another 88, which included one birdie and five pars, in the third round.
Freshman Shreena Pennam (Southlake, Texas/Spring Creek Academy), who played as an individual, recorded a team-high four birdies to go with 23 pars en route a 249 (becoming the sixth Dolphin to break 250) to finish in a three-way tie for 47th. She tallied an 83, including nine pars, in the first round. She followed with a career-best 77 in the afternoon, which featured three birdies and eight pars. She turned in an 89 in the final round, including one birdie and six pars.
The Dolphins close out the Fall season at the College of the Holy Cross’s Crusader Invitational presented by Cove Risk on October 21 and 22 at Worcester Country Club in Worcester, Massachusetts.
