Women’s Golf Opens Spring In Orlando – University of North Carolina Athletics
The 13th-ranked Tar Heels open the spring portion of their schedule as the defending champions of the PDI Intercollegiate (previously known as the UCF Challenge) beginning Sunday at Eagle Creek Golf Club in Orlando, Fla.
The Tar Heels are coming off one of their strongest fall seasons in recent memory with a win and three top-five finishes in four events.
The milestone performance of the fall was an 18-shot victory at the Cavalier Regional Preview in Charlottesville. UNC shot 22 under par, bolstered by junior Inez Ng’s 12-under-par medalist performance. UNC and Ng set 54-hole school records, respectively, for fewest strokes in a tournament by team and an individual player.
A year ago in Orlando, Megan Streicher broke Carolina’s 18-hole scoring record, firing an 8-under-par 64 in the first round, edging the previous record of 65 set by Streicher’s former teammates Kayla Smith and Krista Junkkari. Streicher carded four birdies on the final four holes, which included a long putt on her final hole (the fifth at Eagle Creek), to secure the record.
Streicher’s first-round performance vaulted the Tar Heels into first place, a lead they did not look back from as they won the tournament by five strokes over Kansas.
Carolina’s win in the UCF Challenge was the precursor to a strong spring, which included a victory at the NC State Match Play, the program’s first match play appearance at the ACC Championship and UNC’s first appearance in the NCAA Championship since 2017.
UNC head coach Aimee Neff is excited to begin another spring season at a place that brought great success last year.
“We’re excited to head to Florida and kick off our spring season at the PDI Intercollegiate,” says Neff. “Practicing and playing rounds with teammates is always valuable, but there’s nothing like getting on the road and competing against top competition. Since returning to campus from the winter break, we’ve put in the work and now it’s time to put it to the test. We’re grateful for the opportunity to compete and are proud to represent Carolina.”
Joining Streicher and Ng in the lineup are Ing Iadpluem, Reagan Southerland and Helen Yeung. Katie Vu is also in the field as an individual entry.
In addition to winning last year, the Tar Heels also won the UCF Challenge in 2013.
The PDI Intercollegiate field includes five top-30 teams – No. 10 Mississippi State, No. 18 Duke, No. 24 Kansas and No. 27 Baylor.
