SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College women’s golf team finished up its fall season on a high note on Sunday, taking first place at the two-day Union Fall Invitational, held on Saturday and Sunday at Mohawk Golf Club.
The Garnet Chargers shot 339 as a team on Sunday to finish the weekend at 673, 19 strokes clear of runner-up Vassar College (692). St. Lawrence University (704) took third place at the three-team event.
SLU’s Mary Grace McCann earned medalist honors with a two-day score of 158, shooting a 78 on Sunday to pick up a two-stroke win over Union first-year Iyene Essien and Vassar’s Teaen Sweet. Sophia Calvillo of Vassar and senior Liz Bentsianov of Union rounded out the top five.
Essien was Union’s top scorer on the weekend after carding a second straight round of 80 on Sunday to finish at 160. The first-year posted dual nines of 40 to finish the weekend, with only a couple bad holes spoiling an otherwise steady round that featured 12 pars and a birdie on the par-four 14th hole.
Bentsianov tied for fourth place with a two-day score of 168 after shooting an 86 on Sunday. The senior recorded a team-best two birdies on the afternoon, coming on the par-three 2nd and the par-four 14th, on the way to posting a 43 on both sides.
Junior Shea White took sixth place overall by finishing the weekend at 171. She shot an 83 on day two, highlighted by a birdie on the par-three 2nd hole, using a back-nine 40 that featured four pars and five bogeys.
First-year Carinna Anastasio finished in eighth place after shooting a 90 on Sunday to finish at 174, her best two-day total of the fall season by eight strokes. She rebounded from a challenging front nine to come in with a 41, highlighted by a four on the par-five 13th hole.
Senior Katerina Dimacopoulos shaved six strokes off her score from yesterday with a 94 on Sunday, finishing in 12th place at 194. First-year Ella Golas played as an individual and ended the weekend at 203, following yesterday’s 102 with a 101 on Sunday.
After carding three of the top-seven two-day scores in program history this fall, Union will take some time away from the course before returning to action in the spring.
