Peggy Antonio was one of Australia’s first female cricket stars – a wonderfully talented leg spinner from Port Melbourne who decided to retire from the game at the height of her fame at just 22 years old.
Speaking to the Herald in 1939, Antonio talked of losing her love for the game. “I am going to do all the things I’ve wanted to do for years. Play golf, tennis, swim — just do anything and everything but play cricket.
“I took my equipment to the match on Saturday, but somehow I felt more fed up than usual and decided to call it a day there and then. I have had too much cricket and will be better away from it for a while.”
