Wise, a financial technology company, is closing its Tampa office, a move that will result in 306 layoffs, according to a notice filed with the state.
The company plans to shutter its offices at 4925 Independence Parkway with layoffs of workers scheduled to start in April and continue through November, according to the notice sent to the Florida Department of Commerce and Mayor Jane Castor.
Wise employees will receive at least 60 days’ notice of their termination, the notice states. The jobs being cut include 40 customer support specialists, 37 customer support associates and 43 senior agents positions.
Wise, which touts on its website that it has 10 million active customers, has offices in Austin and New York, in addition to locations in London, Tokyo, Singapore and Brazil. Formerly known as TransferWise, it provides a low-fee money transfer service.
Its Tampa operation was initially based in Ybor City. It relocated to the Independence Parkway site in October 2023. The office had 443 employees around that time, according to a survey Wise filled out for the Tampa Bay Times’ Top Workplaces awards.
