MADISON, Wis. — The nation’s most watched sporting event, the Super Bowl, is just days away, and much of those eyes may be on the screen for their own self interests.
Wisconsin, unlike most states, has strong limits on legalized sports betting. It isn’t as simple as placing a bet on your phone with an app, but that has not stopped an increase in calls to the Wisconsin Council on Problem Gambling.
“The thing though, to know with any type of gambling is if somebody wants to do is going to find a way to do it. So even though it may not always be legal, they may still be, sports betting,” said Director of WCPG, Rose Blozinski.
With major sporting events on the horizon, the organization sees annual influxes of callers this time of the year.
“After the Super Bowl, we usually will get calls about people who have lost a lot of money. And it kind of goes through February into March as we then go into March Madness. So, we definitely see an increase in calls, not only from gamblers themselves, but from family members or concerned loved ones,” says Blozinski.
According to the council, 1 to 5 percent of the country’s population has a gambling addiction.
“Gambling addiction is very common, because nothing is ingested, we don’t think of it as an addiction like other addictions. It can be just as powerful. It can be just as damaging,” she says.
The council also does seminars at high schools to spread awareness on gambling addictions, making an effort to educate as soon as possible.
