PINELAND, Texas (KTRE) – Hundreds of jobs are expected to grow over the next decade as people move one to different job roles or retire.
West Sabine High student Elizabeth Smith and hundreds more attended a college and career fair Tuesday afternoon. Smith said she plans to attend college after graduation and hopes to open up her own practice as a child psychologist. According to the U.S. Labor Department, healthcare is expected to be the fastest-growing job sector. It’s projected to add more than two million jobs over the next 10 years.
“I don’t believe children’s psychology and mental health is advocated for enough and I really want to be able to do that,” said Smith.
Jobs in renewable energy, like solar panel installers and wind turbine service technicians, are also set to rise much faster than the national average.
” I hope to see it happen because green energy is more renewable energy and that’s just a good thing in the long run and eventually, we all run out, but we need to go on about that in a sustainable way,” said student Lucas Burrow.
The three fastest growing jobs over ten years according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics:
Burrow plans to get a degree in computer science. He aspires to become an electrical engineer. Computer scientists are projected to grow by 26 percent between now through 2033. More than 3,000 job openings are projected each year. The median income is more than $145,000.
Computer and information research scientists is the highest paying job field that made the Bureau of Labor Statistics list.
“[I want to] help design technology and help make the world a better place,” said Burrow.
College and career advisor Tara Bragg said the mission is to educate students and residents they can build a career right at home.
“We want these kids to go out and learn and bring it home so, you know, we can build our community into a stronger community,” said Bragg.
