Plans to expand the site of the Wimbledon tennis championships to almost three times the size have been given the green light after three years of back-and-forth.
The All England Lawn Tennis Club’s revised proposal, including an 8,000-seat show court and 38 practice courts built on a neighbouring golf course, was approved by Jules Pipe, the deputy mayor of London in charge of planning, at a public hearing on Friday.
“The eponymous Wimbledon Championships is the most prestigious tournament in world tennis,” Pipe said. “I consider that the proposal would be important in helping secure the future of these championships.”
