MONTGOMERY – On a day when weather conditions dictated the action, Tennessee-Chattanooga handled them best as the Mocassins rallied past four teams to win Tuesday’s Bentwater Intercollegiate men’s golf tournament at the Bentwater Country Club. ACU, in fourth place at 5-under-par after the first two rounds on Monday, finished in fourth, despite shooting a 17-over-par 301 in Tuesday’s final round.
The Wildcats went into Tuesday’s final round sitting in fourth at 5-under-par, eight strokes behind tournament-leading Sam Houston State, also the host. But inclement weather moved into the area overnight and loomed throughout Tuesday’s final round, dampening course conditions and causing a delay late in the round. The Bearkats, ranked No. 56 in the country, were at 13-under-par after Monday’s play but shot 12-over-par 296 to finish second at 1-under-par for the three rounds.
Midland College — the nation’s top-ranked junior college team — was second after two rounds at 9-under-par but slumped to a 19-over-par on Tuesday to finish third at 10-overpar. ACU was fourth, followed by Central Arkansas, in third after the first two rounds. The Bears were 7-under par after Monday’s rounds but ballooned to a 29-over-par 313 on Tuesday to finish in fifth at 22-over-par.
Preston Cooper (sixth) and Gregoire Hoyeau (eighth) finished in the top 10. Cooper finished at 1-under-par 212 after rounds of 72-65-75. Hoyeau — last week’s WAC Male Golfer of the Week — finished at 2-over-par 215 after rounds of 73-70-72. Jaime Lewis was 23rd at 6-over-par 219 after rounds of 72-69-78, followed by Niklas Blalock, who was 35th at 8-over-par 221 with scores of 72-70-79, and Colin Leonard in 47th at 11-over-par 224 after carding scores of 74-74-76.
The Wildcats, ranked No. 116 in the country, have finished in the top four in both spring tournaments this season after opening last week with a fourth-place finish at the Los Vaqueros Intercollegiate in Mexico. ACU has finished in the top four of its six tournaments, going back to the fall schedule.
ACU will be off the rest of the month before returning to action March 3-4 at the Houston Christian Colin Montgomerie Invitational at the Sweetwater Country Club in Sugar Land.
