J. Crew? We at Town & Country know them well. In fact, they were probably sporting the New England staple since the day they could say the word “lacrosse.” But, Engineered Garments? The brand might be newer to some. As an editor who loves both traditional and contemporary design, their latest collaboration together is one worth running the AMEX a few times. Here’s why.
Since it was founded in 1991 by Japanese-American Daiki Suzuki, Engineered Garments captivated fashionable consumers for its utilitarian take on classic staples; there was always a heavy use of patterns and pockets. Today, we see the traditional codes of menswear being broken time and time again (what even is black tie anymore?), but Suzuki was having a bit more fun with clothing long before.
So, when Engineered Garments and the American Classic J. Crew put their heads together, the result is a collection that gives classic styles a bit of edge. Some standouts include the gray mohair sweater that features a faded plaid print; a gorgeous navy blue corduroy blazer and jacket; a utility parka; a lightwash denim shirt; and wide-legged chinos. There’s also a navy crewneck that has fabric patches on its shoulders, with a pocket on the chest. For those who want to make it clear that they are part of the fashion cult Engineered Garments has created over time, there’s a light-grey sweater with a forest graphic and the words: “Freedom and Unity” and “Engineered Garments” on it.
The pieces range from $17 (a pair of socks) to $600 (the aforementioned parka). Below, we’ve rounded up the pieces that we are shopping for the fall and winter seasons.
