If we told you that there was an NBA analyst who thinks we should hate the Boston Celtics 2024 NBA offseason, we think it likely you might not get the reasoning behind such a take. The Celtics are fresh off winning their 18th banner — a league record — and have brought back nearly the entire roster that did it. What’s not to like?

Full disclosure — the analyst is Bleacher Report’s Grant Hughes, and in fairness to Hughes, he had to work to come up with something in an article surveying the entire Association for reasons to hate each team’s respective offseasons. That said, Hughes had a bit of point even so, especially in light of what we have been hearing about roster costs potentially being part of why Wyc Grousbeck and family may be offloading their shares of the storied ball club.

“The extensions for (Jayson) Tatum, (Derrick) White and (Sam) Hauser total nearly $500 million,” writes Hughes.

“On top of Jrue Holiday’s in-season re-up and the max extension Finals MVP Jaylen Brown inked prior to last year, the Celtics are rocketing into spending tiers the league has never seen before,” adds the B/R analyst. “At some point, this operation will become prohibitively costly.”

“That’s a concern for the future. Boston is paying market rates for the best roster in the league, and we can’t even pretend to hate it. Something had to fill this space, though.” That future could arrive sooner than anticipated, though, if recent rumbles about finances prove accurate. Fingers crossed this contention arc finishes with more titles, and no broken fan hearts.
