Jimmy Butler’s Heat career looks to be coming to a swift and unceremonious end.

After two NBA Finals appearances, two All-Star appearances and three All-NBA nods, Butler looks destined to take his talents elsewhere sooner rather than later.

Butler has made his view on his future with Miami abundantly clear. On Tuesday night, he added to the mayhem, serving up what looked to be a curious fashion choice for the Heat’s clash with the Trail Blazers — at least until you consider the team he’s been most consistently linked with on the trade market.

With that, here’s what you need to know about Butler’s shoes, which took on a life of their own after he sported a Suns-like colorway.

Why Jimmy Butler’s shoes stirred NBA trade rumors

Butler’s kicks for Miami’s home game against Portland drew plenty of interest across the basketball world, with some believing his choice in footwear foreshadows a change of destination for the 35-year old.

Butler’s shoes were adorned in color — namely the orange, purple and yellow that sprawls across Phoenix jerseys.

ESPN’s Brian Windhorst reported that the Suns are Butler’s No. 1 destination in the event he is traded from the Heat.

“Jimmy’s No. 1 focus is getting traded, preferably, to the Phoenix Suns. Everything else is secondary,” Windhorst said during Monday during an episode of his “Hoop Collective” podcast. “Not getting traded to ‘Team X,’ not getting traded to ‘Team Y,’ getting traded to the Phoenix Suns.”

Butler has been adamant that he’s seeking a change in scenery, formally requesting a trade from his longtime employers in early January. ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that Butler “tripled down” on his trade request during meetings with Pat Riley and team owner Mickey Arison.

Butler clearly wants gone. Based on Tuesday’s display, he doesn’t seem to be too interested in hiding that fact, either. As the Feb. 6 trade deadline approaches, the whispers surrounding Butler’s future will only get louder. Miami certainly will have a decision to make.

Phoenix’s chances of acquiring Butler’s services took a turn for the better Tuesday when the team acquired three first-round picks from the Jazz. The trade, which saw the Suns deal an unprotected 2031 first-round selection in exchange for the rights to the worst of the Cavaliers, Timberwolves and Jazz’s first-round picks in 2025, 2027 and 2029, offers the Suns a bit more flexibility as it aims to craft a package to make space for Butler.

Butler’s arrival would almost certainly necessitate Bradley Beal heading elsewhere, be that to Miami or another destination. Phoenix also will ned to find a way out of Jusuf Nurkic’s contract, which will see him net $19.3 million in 2025-26. To do so, the Suns will likely need to attach a first-round pick to any potential trade package.

The prospective picks Phoenix acquired aren’t the most high-profile — they likely won’t come anywhere close to lottery status. Still, that might be enough to coax some side into making a move, clearing the roster enough for the Suns to land Butler.
