In a revealing episode of The Ultra Edge Podcast by Cricwick, Hasan Ali discussed Pakistan’s cricket team’s challenges, particularly the constant changes in coaching staff over the past few years.
Ali believes that the lack of stability due to frequent coaching changes has impacted the team’s performance. He highlighted how, during the 2023 World Cup, despite one injury of Naseem, the team had a solid core.

The fast bowler also reflected on how management’s decisions affect the team, noting that when Mickey Arthur was the coach, he had full authority and took responsibility for selections, press conferences, and overall team management.
Hasan emphasized the importance of the captain having authority and a collaborative approach with the selection committee for better team coherence.
Hasan Ali highlights the constant changes in coaching staff as the biggest challenge for the Pakistan cricket team, which has led to a lack of stability.
He said: “For the past four to five years, we have changed around 26 to 27 coaches within the team. It’s been true for four years, it’s true, it’s okay, but when you don’t have stability, these kinds of things happen. So when the coaches change, your thinking also changes, right? That’s how it is.”

Ali shared that during the 2023 World Cup, the team had a stable core, with only one change made due to Naseem Shah’s injury. He was chosen as a replacement because of his experience and availability, as he was playing county cricket at the time.
Hasan expressed that management and Babar Azam trusted him and backed him to perform, which motivated him to play six matches and take nine wickets.

He said: “When we went to the 2023 World Cup, we had the same team, only one change was made because, unfortunately, Naseem got injured. Management and Babar said, ‘We need an experienced bowler,’ and so, I was chosen because I was already there, playing county cricket. I came back, and they told me, ‘We are trusting you, and we will back you; it’s fine,’ and I played six matches and took nine wickets.
“I think one match went badly, but the selectors at the time called me and said, ‘You’re bowling excellently, everything is going well, and this is exactly what we expected from you, except for one match.”

Hasan Ali suggests that the solution lies in providing the captain with full authority to lead, while also ensuring that the management and selection committee work together cohesively, as was the case when Mickey Arthur had complete control over team decisions.
“A captain can’t run the team alone, and in Pakistan, the captain can’t manage everything. We don’t have someone like Imran Khan. Imran Khan is one of a kind. So, you either give the captain full authority, or you let the selection committee or management work together. When Mickey was there, I know, even though I was a kid at that time, Mickey took on all the responsibility.” Ali said.
