As Thanksgiving is here, many fitness enthusiasts will wonder whether their favorite gyms and studios will remain open during the holiday.
Several gyms across the nation will be open on Thanksgiving Day for those who don’t want to miss their regular workout session.
While some facilities may close their doors to allow staff time with their families, others offer modified hours to accommodate those looking to stay active before or after their feast.
Whether you hit the gym or relax at home, staying mindful of your health and wellness goals can make the holiday more enjoyable. Here is a breakdown of what to expect from major gym chains this Thanksgiving:
Most Planet Fitness locations will be open on Thanksgiving, though hours may vary by location, as they are owned and operated by individual franchise owners. Many clubs operate on reduced schedules. It’s best to check your local club’s hours in advance via the Planet Fitness website.
A spokesperson for Planet Fitness told Newsweek on Thursday: “At Planet Fitness, we believe it’s important to stay active during the holiday season and with the PF Black Card® you can bring a family member or friend with you for free and enjoy a workout together before your holiday gathering. You can find a location near you and check hours here.”
Company-owned Gold’s Gym locations nationwide will be closed on Thursday, but hours may vary at franchise locations, according to a statement from the company shared with USA Today on Tuesday.
To confirm if your local Gold’s Gym will be open, it’s best to contact the gym directly or check its Thanksgiving Day hours online.
As reported by USA Today, Orangetheory Fitness studios will be open on a “modified schedule” to accommodate for the holiday. Most studios across the country will only be open for morning classes.
The fitness studios will also offer a “Thanksgiving Workout” class on Thursday and a “Strength in Numbers Workout” on Friday.
Members are advised to check classes and book with Orangetheory online or by phone.
24 Hour Fitness locations will remain open on Thanksgiving Day until 2 p.m., resuming normal hours or opening at 5 a.m. for 24/7 clubs on Friday, November 29.
However, schedules may vary by location, so members are encouraged to confirm hours at their specific club.
Additionally, members can take advantage of special holiday perks, such as bringing a guest with a “buddy pass” or signing up for a yearlong BOGO membership offer during the season.
As reported by Newsweek, Anytime Fitness offers around-the-clock access to its more than 5,100 locations, making it easy to keep up with your fitness routine on your personal schedule. If you need support in your health journey, you can participate in group workouts and one-on-one training sessions as well as consult with a fitness coach.
Thanksgiving opening times vary, but many of its gyms are open on the day. Check your gym’s social media accounts for information.
YMCA branches may close or offer limited hours on Thanksgiving. Hours may differ significantly depending on the branch. Checking directly with your local YMCA is recommended.
Clubs should be open from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.
More than 175 Life Time health clubs across the country will be open for a period on Thanksgiving Day.
Many clubs will open as early as 4 a.m. or 5 a.m. local time and close at noon local time. Life Time will reopen at 6 a.m. on Friday, November 29.
Members can find out what time their local Life Time facility will be open by clicking here.
Smaller boutique studios and independently owned gyms often decide their Thanksgiving hours on a case-by-case basis. Many align their schedules with community needs, offering holiday-themed workouts like “Turkey Burn” sessions in the morning and Peloton’s hallmark Turkey Burn ride.
Tips for Thanksgiving fitness planning include calling ahead as gym hours can vary significantly, even within the same chain. Also, book early as gyms and studios requiring reservations for Thanksgiving workouts tend to fill up quickly.
If your gym is closed, consider an at-home workout or a post-dinner walk to stay active.
