There’s been a flurry of action within the NFL trade market in the last couple of weeks. But don’t fear! Teams have an additional week longer this season to determine whether they’re buyers or sellers.
This year’s deadline will occur Tuesday, Nov. 5 (yes, Election Day) at 4 p.m. ET.
Here’s what else you need to know about this year’s deadline:
The league’s owners voted during their annual meetings in March to move the trade deadline to after Week 9 instead of Week 8, which placed last season’s deadline on Oct. 31. The Pittsburgh Steelers submitted the rule change for a vote. There was actually a push for the deadline to be even later, but the Week 9 deadline was the proposal that passed.
It depends on the year. In 2022, there were a record 10 trades on deadline day, including high-profile players like Bradley Chubb, Calvin Ridley and T.J. Hockenson. Other players involved in deals near the deadline two seasons ago included Christian McCaffrey, Roquan Smith and Robert Quinn.
There weren’t nearly as many trades on deadline day last season, with six swaps. Some recognizable names to move on deadline day in 2023 were Montez Sweat, Rasul Douglas and Chase Young.
Trades can be agreed upon during the offseason, but aren’t official until March 12 at 4 p.m. ET. It coincides with the start of the new league year and when free agents can officially sign with other teams.
Wide receivers have been a popular choice leading up to this year’s deadline:
There have also been a couple of trades involving notable defensive players.
The Chiefs pulled off another trade Monday, acquiring edge rusher Josh Uche from the New England Patriots. The Seattle Seahawks added Titans linebacker Ernest Jones IV in a trade last week in exchange for linebacker Jerome Baker and a fourth-round draft pick.
Dianna Russini offered her latest trade deadline intel over the weekend, including some pass rushers she expects to draw interest.
The Athletic’s NFL beat writers looked at every team to determine whether they should buy, sell or stand pat.
And Mike Jones and Jeff Howe highlighted a handful of trades they would like to see before Nov. 5.
