Taylor Fritz begins his quest for his first ever tennis Grand Slam at the 2024 US Open on Monday (August 26), when he will take on unseeded Argentinian Camilo Ugo Carabelli in the first round of the men’s singles competition.
The match between Fritz and Ugo Carabelli is scheduled second at Louis Armstrong Stadium on Monday and will take place after the women’s singles encounter between China’s Qinwen Zheng and the USA’s Amanda Anisomova, which is due to begin at 11am ET.
12th seed Fritz has never previously played against his first-round opponent, who is currently ranked 93rd in the world, slightly down from his highest ever ranking (91st).
Ugo Carabelli mainly plays on the ATP Challenger Tour but has played in four Grand Slams in the past, with his best performance coming in the 2022 French Open, when he reached the second round.
The Argentine also entered his home open earlier this year, losing 2-6, 5-7 to Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz, who was surprisingly beaten in the semifinals by Chile’s Nicolás Jarry.
Should Fritz win, as is expected, he will face either Spanish veteran Albert Ramos Viñolas or former world No. 6 Matteo Berrettini in round two. The 26-year-old is in the bottom half of the draw, which means he has avoided both top seed Jannik Sinner and third seed Alcaraz.
Fritz’s most difficult run to the final would see him face 17th seed Ugo Humbert in the third round, Casper Ruud (8th) in the fourth, Alexander Zverev (4th) in the quarterfinals and Novak Djokovic (2nd) in the semifinals.
The 26-year-old has eight ATP Tour singles titles to his name but has struggled to make an impact in the latter stages Grand Slams. Fritz has never gone beyond the quarterfinals of any of the four majors, with his best performance at the US Open coming last year, when he was beaten in straight sets in the last eight by Djokovic.
