Wheeling, W. Va. – The Wheeling University Men’s Golf program has undergone some changes during the winter break, and will begin a new era in Spring 2025. New Head Coach Caleb Lee is at the helm, and he looks to guide the young Cardinals team as they continue to grow on the course. On Thursday, the team announced their spring 2025 schedule, featuring four tournaments, with two of those coming against top Mountain East Conference (MEC) opponents.
The 2024 fall schedule was comprised entirely of MEC competition for the Cardinals, as they headed to three different tournaments to prepare them for the MEC Championships. The season kicked off at the Golden Eagle Invitational, hosted by the University of Charleston, and the Cardinals would make an early splash, finishing 10th out of 17 teams. It was the first of two top 10 regular season finishes for the team, as the Cardinals followed that up with a 7th place finish at the Dr. Wally Edgel Invitational. The regular season ended in their own backyard as they took on the West Liberty Invitational at Oglebay Park, where the Cardinals took 11th out of the 14 teams in attendance.
As they entered the MEC Men’s Golf Championships, the Cardinals were looking to make it to the third day of competition for the first time since 2016. After a strong start to day one that saw them sitting second in the field, the Cardinals were able to do just that, finishing the second day in fourth place. That was the position they would finish, putting together a three-day score of 906 and clinching their best finish since the 2016 season. With a roster comprised of all freshmen and sophomores, the Cardinals look to continue their growth into the spring and build off that success as they continue to build a strong foundation for the Wheeling Men’s Golf program moving forward.
The 2025 spring schedule will feature four tournaments for the Cardinal golfers between March and April, with two of those being conference tournament. It kicks off on March 22nd when the team heads to Charleston, West Virginia for the annual MEC Spring Classic in Charleston, West Virginia. The two-day event will be the final conference sanctioned event of the season, with the All-MEC honors being named following the tournament. They will follow that up with their first non-conference tournament two weeks later with the Ohio Dominican University April 4th – 5th. They return to their own backyard with a tournament against West Liberty running April 6th – 8th in a quick turnaround before ending their spring. They will do that by challenging themselves against the best of the best as they head to Erie, Pennsylvania for the Atlantic Regional Preview hosted by Gannon April 20th-22nd .
The Wheeling University Men’s Golf team kicks off their spring season on Saturday, March 22nd on day one of the MEC Spring Classic.
