AUBURN HILLS, MI – MARCH 17: P.J. Tucker #2 of the Toronto Raptors celebrates after a Detroit … [+]
The Toronto Raptors’ primary move leading up to this year’s trade deadline was acquiring Brandon Ingram. The two sides since agreed to a three-year, $120 million extension.
Toronto’s activity leading up to the trade deadline also included parting with guard Davion Mitchell in exchange for P.J. Tucker, a second-round draft pick, and cash from the Miami Heat.
For Tucker, it was a part of a whirlwind week. The Los Angeles Clippers traded him, Mo Bamba, and cash to the Utah Jazz on Feb. 1. Utah acquired Drew Eubanks, Patty Mills, and a second-round pick in the 2030 NBA Draft.
Tucker got rerouted back to the Heat on Feb. 5 in the deal that sent Jimmy Butler to the Golden State Warriors. Golden State is 7-1 in the games Butler has played with them. The Warriors have moved up to seventh in the Western Conference. They’re only half a game behind the sixth-seeded Los Angeles Clippers.
As far as principal agreements go, the trade ping-ponging Tucker’s rights from a return to Miami to getting shipped north of the border occurred a day after the Butler deal. Although, both did not become official until Feb. 6.
The 39-year-old Raleigh, North Carolina native never suited up for the Raptors, the franchise he started his NBA career with in the 2006-07 season. He also returned in a trade deadline deal in the 2016-17 campaign. However, if he dons a Toronto jersey for a third time, it won’t be this season.
ESPN’s Shams Charania reports the Raptors waived Tucker on Friday. The six-foot-five wing was on an expiring three-year contract paying him slightly north of $33 million.
DALLAS, TEXAS – MAY 03: P.J. Tucker #17 of the LA Clippers shoots the ball against the Dallas … [+]
Tucker, who helped the Milwaukee Bucks lift the Larry O’Brien Trophy at the conclusion of the 2020-21 campaign, has yet to play this season. He only appeared in 31 tilts in 2023-24. The 13-year veteran averaged 1.7 points and 2.7 rebounds in 15.7 minutes. He has career averages of 6.6 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 1.1 steals. He’s also converted 2.7 career three-point attempts at a 36.6 percent clip.
After bouncing around in a series of trades, Tucker could soon find himself on a playoff team with a chance to once again prove himself and strengthen a franchise’s extended rotation.
Potential destinations that come to mind are the Oklahoma City Thunder. They boast the best record in the Western Conference at 47-11 and are one game behind the league-leading Cleveland Cavaliers, who are 48-10. As a younger team, perhaps the Thunder would want to add Tucker, a veteran with a championship pedigree.
It’s also conceivable that Ime Udoka views Tucker as a culture fit, and he returns to the Houston Rockets, a franchise he spent over three years with.
At 39 years old, it’s also possible that Tucker has already played his last game in the NBA.
