With his first full year underway, men’s basketball head coach Mike DeGeorge and his staff are looking to make big moves in recruiting, getting three commitments for the Mustangs early on into the 2024-2025 season.
According to social media and Verbal Commits, Jason Scott, Braden Freeman, and Troy Plumtree are the three most recent players from the 2025 recruiting class to commit to the Cal Poly men’s basketball team.
DeGeorge is clarifying the type of players he wants on his roster.
Versatility, length, and three-point shooters. These guys are nothing short of that, and they will fit right into the Mustangs’ fast-paced, free-flowing offense. DeGeorge brings a new free-flowing system of basketball that we will see a lot of this season.
Position: Guard
Height: 6’3Â
High School: Westbury Christian
The six-foot-three senior guard from Houston has the chance to make an immediate impact on the Mustangs. According to 247sports, Jason Scott is a three-star shooting guard who is the 77th-ranked player at his position in the class of 2025. This made him the second three-star DeGeorge brought into the program in his first year.
Last season for the Wildcats, Scott averaged 23 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three stocks (steals and blocks) per game while shooting a near 50, 40, and 80 split.
There is a reason DeGeorge is interested in him: He will continue the roster’s trend of explosiveness, be a threat from anywhere on the floor, and be a physical, gritty presence on defense.
Position: Shooting Guard/Small Forward
Height: 6’6Â
High School: Moline
Freeman is a lengthy wing from Bradley, IL, that fits the exact mold for the Mustang’s system.Â
The 6-foot 6-inch forward is not new to winning basketball. Each year of his high school career, he has led his teams to top 40 records, with his sophomore year squad finishing at a very impressive 35-3 and No. 3 in Illinois.
Freeman has a superb mid-low post-game for a guard, athleticism, and good footwork. Expect to see some development from him under DeGeorge next season.
Position: Small Forward
Height: 6’7Â
High School: NBL – Wellington Saints
Continuing the theme of international recruits, Troy Plumtree from New Zealand is the most recent and arguably biggest commitment for Cal Poly men’s basketball thus far.
The 17-year-old played for Wellington College last year, where he won the national high school championship in New Zealand.
To complement his extremely high motor, Plumtree is a constant lob threat who will dunk everything, has a rim presence that will send anything that goes his way in the other direction and has a soft, smooth lefty stroke.
His wingspan also went from 6-foot 6-inches to 6-foot 10-inches this summer.
Plumtree is coming off a summer where he played for New Zealand’s U17 FIBA World Cup team, averaging 13 points and nearly eight rebounds a game (per FIBA Basketball). He is now developing his game in the National Basketball League (NBL), producing NBA stars such as Lamelo Ball, Josh Giddey, and Alexandre Sarr.
These recent commitments will continue their senior seasons in preparation for making an impact with Mike DeGeorge and Cal Poly men’s basketball next season.
