The end of Tomorrow’s Golf League’s (TGL) first season is just a few weeks away. Seeing TGL capture fans’ attention and hold onto it has been wild. The league had a rocky start, but the last few weeks have seen many positives.
With the season’s end fast approaching, I wanted to discuss what the TGL could look like with a couple of expansion teams. Instead of six teams, what if there were eight?
The current six teams include the New York Golf Club, The Bay Golf Club, the Los Angeles Golf Club, Atlanta Drive, Jupiter Links and Boston Commons.
Where would the two expansion teams land?
I think Texas and Arizona should have squads. These are two places known for their golf.
Putting a team in Texas is one of the easiest choices because the state has so many talented PGA Tour players who call it home.
Not to mention, when Jordan Spieth appeared on the Smylie Kaufman show, they discussed getting Texas a squad.
The interview came after TGL announced that Tony Finau would join the Los Angeles Golf Club on a one-match contract. Kaufman asked Spieth about being a substitute player on one of the teams, which opened a can of worms.
Spieth suggested putting a SoFi Stadium in Dallas, which brought up the Texas team. Kaufman asked him to workshop a team name, and he jokingly said the “Dallas Schefflers.”
Spieth already had his team picked out, and I mostly liked his choices.
Of course, he picked Scottie Scheffler and Will Zalatoris. Spieth also wants to steal Tom Kim away from Jupiter Links. If I were in charge, I would let Tom Kim stay with Tiger and recruit Sam Burns.
Burns would make an excellent addition to the team.
Texas would instantly be a front-runner with this roster and would likely give LAGC and The Bay a run for their money. Not to mention, Spieth talking to his ball nonstop and the other three’s dry humor, they would be gold on television.
The Phoenix, Scottsdale area is another golf hotspot that could be perfect for the eighth team.
Its annual Waste Management Phoenix Open is one of the PGA Tour’s most popular tournaments. A laid-back TGL team honoring the Arizona city would be perfect for team golf.
Who would be on the team? I would put Viktor Hovland, Joel Dahmen, Tony Finau and Keith Mitchell.
The vibes would be immaculate on this team. Dahmen and Mitchell would have the best one-liners, while Finau and Hovland would be sneakily funny. These four are beyond talented, but they also have personalities made for prime-time television.
Finau’s appearance on LAGC will give a good idea of how he would perform in the league full-time, and I am excited to see how much he expresses his personality.
Hovland is a lot like Ludvig Åberg on the Bay Golf Club team. They are two young players who are quiet but still have personalities waiting to emerge. He has shown his personality off in multiple instances, and fans love it.
I think he would be fantastic on television.
As for team names, the Texas team would have to go with the Texas Wedges. When I saw that on the social post from Kaufman’s podcast, I knew that would be the team name.
As for Arizona, how about the Scottsdale Sand Trappers. The name flows well together and complement other teams’ golf-themed names. The team could also use the Scottsdale Golf Club for a more traditional approach.
TGL needs to add more teams because the league needs more competition. Seeing the same guys play repeatedly is getting old quickly. So, adding a couple of new teams would mix it up just enough to keep it entertaining.
What do you think of the two expansion team possibilities? Should there be more? Who would you put on a team, and what would its name be? Let us know in the comments below.
