NORMAN — OU football’s new quarterback is soaking in the spotlight.
Jackson Arnold made an appearance Tuesday afternoon on The Paul Finebaum Show and discussed his first career start and the Sooners’ inaugural season in the SEC.
Arnold completed 17 of his 25 pass attempts for 141 yards and four touchdowns in his first career regular season start Friday in a blowout win over Temple. Before OU hosts Houston at 6:45 p.m. Saturday on SEC Network, Arnold said he isn’t looking ahead to conference play and he’s zeroed in on the Cougars.
Few know SEC football like Finebaum, a longtime radio and television host, whose show on the SEC Network airs five days a week.
Here’s some of what Arnold said:

OU football’s Jackson Arnold makes appearance on ‘The Paul Finebaum Show’ before Houston
- On the Sooners’ season-opening win: “It was awesome for us. Obviously, a lot of anticipation going into the season, going to the SEC. The guys were ready to go out and play some ball and we had a great time Friday. Showed a lot of good stuff, have a lot of stuff to clean up, but overall it was a great experience.”
- On joining the SEC: “For me, I was actually a recruit when talks of OU joining the SEC (emerged). So for me, it was kind of a recruiting piece. I was born in Atlanta, Georgia, lived there for the first 10 years of my life, so I grew up watching SEC football. It’s something that I grew up watching. Grew up watching those teams, and so for me, it was really special that I knew I was joining a team that was going to be playing in the SEC.”
- On correcting Week 1 mistakes: Film room, first off, just seeing what the mistakes actually are. Whether it’s missed assignments, missed signals, or missed throws or missed reads, anything like that. You first see it in the film room, know what you need to adjust and you go out onto the field, whether it’s the next day or the next couple of days and you work on those things you messed up.”
- On how much the playbook will open up: “The playbook’s definitely going to open up. It’s not that the playbook was very vanilla to begin with for the game plan. … I felt like (offensive coordinator Seth Littrell) called a great game, put us in great positions and I think for these next couple of weeks, it’s just us developing our identity. Really establishing what we’re going to do with this offense. I’m super excited for these next couple weeks to really open up our offense.”
- On being QB1: That was the biggest thing for me this offseason, was going into a situation where I knew I was going to be the guy. I knew that all these coaches had faith in me to go out and perform. For me, just building that leadership and the toughness that it takes to be the quarterback at, not only a Power 4 school, but at the University of Oklahoma. Just having the offseason to really prepare myself for what I was walking into was huge for me to build chemistry with my coaches and my teammates.”
- On adapting to a new coordinator: “It’s different switching from coach to coach, but luckily for me, Coach Littrell was in our room last year. He was the analyst for us, so he didn’t really help coach QBs really, he might have had some input on some things in the offense, but as a quarterback, he didn’t help us a ton, he didn’t sit with us a ton. But I still knew who Coach Littrelll was. I talked with him a good amount last year, I got close with him. And so for me, having a familiar face to transition to was huge for me, not a ton in the offense changed. Coach Littrell ran a very similar system back at UNT and to integrate that into what we did, or what I did last year was huge for me.”
- On not looking ahead: “For us, and for the team, it’s really just (about) focusing on the opponent at hand, and that’s Houston right now. Obviously there’s people who will talk about the OU-Texas game, the games you have later on. But as (coach Brent Venables) says, the next game is the most important game we have on the schedule. And for us, that’s Houston this week. So for us, just locking in on film study, on practice and just locking into Houston is going to be a big key for us this game and moving forward, too. After Houston, we play Tulane, and then after that we play Tennessee, and it just keeps on going. And the next game you play keeps on being that most important game that you got.”
- On what he did last Saturday: “I was sitting down on the couch watching football all day. When I watch games like that, teams that we’re going to play in the future I might look at their defense and say, ‘OK, this is their base structure.’ But other than that, I really just try to enjoy games. College football was something I grew up watching, something I loved growing up and really, when I’m watching it, outside of my film studying and stuff that I have to prepare myself for the game, I really just try to enjoy the game of football and just enjoy the different colleges.”
- On who he rooted for as a kid: “I was a huge Georgia fan growing up.”
