Is there more diversity across the NFL when it comes to coaches?
USA TODAY Sports’ Tom Schad reveals the latest findings from our annual NFL Coaches Project.
Thanksgiving NFL games are back in 2024, and for the 19th year in a row, three games will be played on the national holiday. For the 59th year in a row, the Detroit Lions and Dallas Cowboys will each play in one of them.
The Lions have played on Thanksgiving every year since 1934, with the exception of the 1939-1945 seasons due to the Great Depression and World War II. The Cowboys adopted a similar tradition in 1966 and have also played on the holiday every year since.
Both teams will play divisional matchups in this year’s Thanksgiving slate, as Detroit takes on the Chicago Bears to start the day, while Dallas will play the New York Giants in the late afternoon.
Rounding out the Thanksgiving NFL games is the Miami Dolphins‘ meeting with the Green Bay Packers in a prime-time face-off. The game will be the first meeting between the two teams since the Packers won on Christmas Day in 2022.
The Lions will return home in Week 13 after a road matchup against the Indianapolis Colts the Sunday before. Chicago will play in its third straight divisional game when it travels to Detroit on Thanksgiving. Their NFC North gauntlet begins when they host the Packers in Week 11, continues at home against the Vikings in Week 12, and ends in the early afternoon on Thanksgiving.
Dallas’ Week 13 clash with the Giants will be its second straight divisional matchup, following a Week 12 game against the Commanders in Washington. The Thanksgiving game will be New York’s second game out of their Week 11 bye after they face the Buccaneers at home in Week 12. Thanks to Dak Prescott’s season-ending hamstring injury and Daniel Jones’ poor performance, both teams will be playing their backup quarterbacks in this game.
The Dolphins hit the road after two straight home games against the Raiders and Patriots in Weeks 11 and 12, respectively. Green Bay will play its second straight home game after playing the Bears in Chicago in Week 11 before hosting the 49ers in Week 12. This clash between the Packers and Dolphins is the second straight meetup between the two teams on a holiday, with their last meeting coming on Christmas Day in 2022.
