Giannis and Khris speak on the importance of the Emirates NBA Cup
Milwaukee Bucks stars Giannis Antetokounmpo and Khris Middleton speak on the importance of the Emirates NBA Cup following practice on Dec. 13, 2024 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
The Milwaukee Bucks are back in the Emirates NBA Cup semifinals for a second straight season.
And Giannis Antetokounmpo, Damian Lillard and Co. hope to hit the jackpot this year after falling in this round to the Indiana Pacers in 2023.
The Bucks (13-11) play the Atlanta Hawks (14-12), representatives of the Eastern Conference, in the first semifinal on Saturday in Las Vegas; the Oklahoma City Thunder (19-5) and Houston Rockets (17-8), out of the Western Conference, play in the other semifinal. It’s the second year the NBA is holding an in-season tournament during the early part of the regular season.
The Bucks are the only team to go perfect so far in NBA Cup games. After posting a 4-0 mark in pool play, the Bucks knocked out the Orlando Magic earlier this week in a quarterfinal game at home behind 37 points from Antetokounmpo and a clutch showing by Lillard.
Besides a championship and $500,000 for players on the winning team, the NBA Cup is a chance for the Bucks to further highlight their turnaround following a disastrous start to the season. The Bucks, who began the year 2-8, have won 11 of their last 14 games. Antetokounmpo has played like an MVP all season, leading the NBA with 32.7 points while averaging 11.4 rebounds, 6.0 assists and shooting 61.2%. He also has his trusted partner back in Khris Middleton.
Like the Bucks, Atlanta started the season slow, going 4-7 in its first 11 games. The Hawks, however, have been one of the NBA’s hottest teams in the last couple of weeks. Atlanta has won seven of its last eight games, with two double-digit victories over the NBA-leading Cleveland Cavaliers to begin the run. The Hawks also beat the Bucks during this stretch this month. Atlanta upset the New York Knicks Wednesday on the road in its NBA Cup quarterfinal game.
Like he has for many years, point guard Trae Young stirs the drink for a deep, athletic Hawks team. He leads the Hawks with 21.0 points per game and his 12.2 assists are No. 1 in the NBA. Jalen Johnson averages a double-double at 19.8 points and 10.1 rebounds. D’Andre Hunter averages 19.6 points.

CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
The NBA Cup semifinal game will be the second time the Bucks and Hawks meet this season. The Bucks lost to the Hawks, 119-104, on Dec. 4 at Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee, a defeat that snapped their seven-game winning streak.
Johnson (Nicolet High School graduate) led six Hawks players in double figures with 23 points. The high-flying fourth-year pro added 13 rebounds and five assists. The Hawks owned the Bucks on the glass, outrebounding Milwaukee, 55-40, including 16 on the offensive end. Hawks center Clint Capela had a game-high 17 rebounds.
The Bucks’ inability to slow down the young Hawks (30 fast break points) was a big factor in the outcome. Antetokounmpo had a double-double with 31 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Bucks. Lillard added 25 points on 8 of 14 shooting.
Here’s the Bucks’ schedule for the rest of December. If the Bucks defeat the Hawks, they’ll play in the NBA Cup championship game on Tuesday, also in Las Vegas. That game will not count toward their overall season record. If the Bucks lose to the Hawks, their next game will be in six days at the Cavaliers, as the regular season continues.
