The Duke men’s basketball team opened the 2024-25 season as one of the primary favorites for the national championship, a rare position for a team to be in after losing 10 members of the previous year’s rotation. Granted, most programs also don’t replenish that roster with four five-star freshmen and a trio of veteran transfers.
First-year superstar Cooper Flagg and the Blue Devils have won 17 of their last 18 games to get off to a 21-3 start, winning 13 of their 14 ACC games for an advantage in the regular-season conference race.
With statement wins over the Auburn Tigers, Arizona Wildcats, Louisville Cardinals, and Wake Forest Demon Deacons already on the resume, Duke looks like a near lock for a No. 1 seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament. But how do they stack up against the other national heavyweights?
As of Thursday afternoon, the Blue Devils are second-leading favorites to cut down the nets. Check out the top seven candidates according to oddsmakers below.

The Tigers lost to Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium, but in a stacked SEC, Auburn has a 22-2 record thanks to 13 Quad 1 wins. Forward Johni Broome (18.1 points. 10.7 rebounds, 3.3 assists, and 2.7 blocks) is Flagg’s primary competition for National Player of the Year honors, and the Tigers’ only other loss came at the hands of the 21-3 Gators.
The Cougars have reached the Sweet 16 in each of the last five editions of March Madness, and three of their four losses in 2024-25 came in overtime.
A neutral-site victory over Illinois next weekend would presumably lock up Duke’s place as a top seed in the tournament. If Flagg and the Blue Devils can snag their own region, all bets are off for the rest of the country.
