MLB Hall of Famer David Ortiz is set to host his 16th annual celebrity golf event, known as “Weekend with Papi,” at JW Marriott Marco Island Beach Resort from Thursday to Sunday.
The social and golf outing will benefit the David Ortiz Children’s Fund and feature dozens of the biggest names in sports and entertainment, according to a news release.
Here’s what you need to know:
In addition to Big Papi himself, several of Ortiz’s former Boston Red Sox teammates, like Pedro Martinez, Johnny Damon, Gabe Kapler; Mookie Betts, Dustin Pedroia, Brock Holt, Jackie Bradley, Jr., and Kevin Youkilis — plus manager Tito Francona — will be in attendance. Other baseball names that are slated to take part include Barry Larkin, Derek Jeter, Jim Rice, Alex Rodriguez, Carl Everett, Dontrelle Willis, Orlando Hernández, Jorge Posada, Shane Spencer, Jim Leyritz, Andruw Jones, Félix Hernández, Jose Reyes, Michael Tucker and Mychael Givens. Other big names in sports expected are Stanley Cup champion Shawn Thornton, NBA champions Julius Erving and Rashard Lewis, three-time Super Bowl champion Lonie Paxton, former professional wrestler Ric Flair and boxing’s Winky Wright. Actors Anthony Mackie and Anthony Anderson are also on the star-studded guest list.
The cause provides lifesaving heart surgeries and care for children in Ortiz’s native Dominican Republic and throughout New England. The surgeries made possible by the fund saved the lives of 1,611 children and aided an additional 16,540 kids. Funds from the organization directly support programs like lifesaving cardiology surgeries and training for emergency workers as well as support for families and Child Life Specialists in Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at MassGeneral Hospital for Children.
Ortiz’s charity was founded in 2007 in partnership with CEDIMAT Hopsital to provide pediatric cardiac surgeries and care in the Dominican Republic and extended its mission to New England. To date, the David Ortiz’s Celebrity Golf Classic has raised more than $12 million for the charity.
Information on sponsorship opportunities and ticket options, including packages that range from $400 to $15,000 for groups and individuals, can be found at https://davidortizchildrensfund.org/weekend-with-papi/.
