BENTON HARBOR, Mich. (WNDU) – Golfers of all skill levels may soon have another option in Berrien County, but this wouldn’t be your regular golf course.
According to our reporting partners at The Herald-Palladium, a nine-hole “wee course” is being proposed at Harbor Shores in Benton Harbor.
While it’s not what you would come to expect for a normal round of golf, it’s far from “putt putt.”
Chris Cook, project manager and managing director and president of Harbor Shores Community Redevelopment, said the wee course will have holes with distances in the 30- to 50-yard range, which is less than the 80- to 150-yard range for traditional par 3 courses.
It would be located on two vacant lots along Graham Avenue between the Renaissance Athletic Club and the parking lot of the Harbor Shores Golf Club.
Cook told The Herald-Palladium these wee courses are designed to be enjoyed by seasoned golfers who want to hang around and enjoy a little more golf in a relaxing atmosphere. They can also be used by beginners and families who are worried about playing on a regular course due to skill level and pace of play.
Colin Montgomerie, who won the 2014 Senior PGA Championship when it was hosted at Harbor Shores, is leading the design of the course. While designs aren’t finalized, plans call for a fire pit, patio, sidewalks, and a building with bathrooms and concessions in addition to the nine short holes.
The proposal is scheduled to go before the Benton Harbor Planning Commission on Tuesday afternoon.
If approved, it’s hoped the wee course can open as soon as late summer or early fall.
