Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max streaming service said it will keep CNN Max news and its BR Sports offerings free on higher tiers of its service, but they will no longer be available on its cheapest, ad-supported basic tier.
The news comes as WBD announced quarterly earnings after the market closed Wednesday, and executives said they hope to push Max subscriber counts past 150 million globally, driven in part by ambitious overseas expansion plans. The streaming service operates in about half the territories of major competitors Netflix and Disney, but expects to roughly match their reach over time, according to company spokespeople. WBD share prices rose nearly 11% Thursday, to around $11.50, on the news.
“Over the last year plus, we had the opportunity to assess how users engage with sports and news on Max, and we’ve been actively involved in exploring ways to evolve the sports distribution ecosystem in the U.S. We believe that the best place for that content for now is within the Standard and Premium tiers,” said JB Perrette, WBD’s CEO and President of Global Streaming and Games. “This update ensures that subscribers can continue to enjoy that coveted access within Max, while also enabling ongoing investment in our premium sports and news portfolio.”
After March 30, CNN Max and B-R Sports will no longer be available for the low-end Max tier, the $9.99-a-month Basic with Ads.

The announcement about news and sports clears up at least one set of questions about some of Max’s potentially stickiest, but most expensive content.
For the past year or so, Max has carried an array of sports, which vary by season and territory, under B-R Sports, the shortened moniker of its Bleacher Report sports unit. When it first added sports to Max, the company initially said it would offer the sports for free for a short time, before charging an add-on expected to be around $10 a month.
“This path will not be pursued for now,” a company release reads.
B-R Sports offerings include NBA and women’s Unrivaled league basketball, MLB baseball, parts of the NCAA March Madness basketball tournament, Big 12 and Big East college sports, NASCAR, men’s and women’s U.S. national soccer matches, NHL hockey, FIA WEC endurance car racing, cycling, French Open tennis, and AEW pro wrestling. NBA games will depart the service after this season under new league contracts with other providers.
B-R Sports also features sports-related programming such as sports-talk staple The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz, and a prank show hosted by NBA star Anthony Davis.
WBD’s news operation, pioneering 24-hour news network CNN, has been in flux for several years now under shifting ownership and leadership, and plummeting TV ratings, especially after the U.S. presidential election.
CNN’s latest CEO, former New York Times and BBC chief Mark Thompson, has spent the past year crafting a digital transition plan for the 24-hour cable news pioneer. The company has invested $70 million in building a modern online presence, Thompson told employees recently. Such digital investments are likely vital for CNN’s long-term success, especially given the fading relevance of cable networks amid cord-cutting and viewers’ shift to streaming options.
Max’s news offerings include the CNN live feed, along with an array of on-demand programming featuring CNN personalities such as Anderson Cooper and Kate Bolduan. Original programming includes shows such as Have I Got News For You, featuring comedians Roy Wood Jr., Amber Ruffin and Michael Ian Black, along with stalwarts such as Real Time with Bill Maher, and the multiple-Emmy-winning Last Week Tonight, with John Oliver.
Antenna recently released figures showing that Max churn, a problem for just about all the major streaming services other than Netflix, had been significantly reduced for its bundle with Disney’s Hulu and Disney+ services.
