Good starts just may be a sign of more good things to come for the Watertown High School boys golf team and the Watertown and Aberdeen Central boys soccer teams.
All three squads continued their successful seasons by recording wins earlier this week.
Watertown’s boys golf team won its first state championship in 62 years last October and could be the favorites to repeat Oct. 7-8 when the Arrows host the state AA golf tourney at Cattail Crossing Golf Course.
The Arrows have won four of five events this season including the Hub City Invite on Tuesday at Aberdeen. Watertown shot 294 and won by four shots over Pierre. Other area teams included Aberdeen Roncalli third (323), Aberdeen Central fourth (326), Groton Area fifth (328), Milbank seventh (356), Sisseton eighth (379) and Redfield ninth (389).
Pierre’s Sawyer Sonnenschein shot a 3-under 68 to win medalist honors by four shots over Watertown’s Ty Lenards and Jaden Solheim. Watertown’s Max Stemwedel was fifth (73), Aberdeen Central’s Jackson Ravellette fifth (74), Milbank’s Jonathan DeBoer eighth (77) and Watertown’s Kaden Rylance ninth (77).

Watertown High School’s boys soccer team improved to 6-0-1 and continued its quest for an Eastern South Dakota Conference championship with a 2-1 win over Pierre on Tuesday at Allen Mitchell Field. The third-rated Arrows got two goals from Riley Fischer, an assist from Carson Schlaht and seven saves from Owen Muller in net.
Watertown’s girls (2-5) fell 4-0 to Pierre with goalkeeper Madison Enstad recording 14 saves.
The fourth-rated Aberdeen Central boys used big plays from goalkeeper Zander Kuhfeld and Tyler Bain to post a 3-2 home win over Huron on Tuesday. After a key stop by Zuhfeld, Bain tacked on his second goal to five the Golden Eagles (5-1-1) a 3-2 win. Gavin Yost also scored.
Aberdeen Central’s girls won 10-0 over Huron, getting two goals from Gracie Lozenski, Ryelynn Hammer and Kyley Stewart. Stewart also had an assist. Kamryn Arnesen added a goal and two assists.
Groton Area’s girls (3-1-1), rated third in Class A, fell 1-0 to Mitchell on Monday. The Tiger boys (0-2-2) lost to Mitchell 10-0.

Watertown’s girls split duals against Sioux Falls Lincoln, losing 7-2, and Sioux Falls Jefferson, winning 6-2, on Tuesday at Sioux Falls. Ellie Zink (6-2, 6-1 at No. 1), Leyla Meyster (6-2, 4-6, 10-7 tiebreaker at No. 2), Faith Berg (6-4, 6-1 at No. 3), Sophia Nichols (6-3, 6-3 at No. 4) and Jade Smith (6-1, 6-1 at No. 6) each won singles matches against Jefferson. Berg-Nichols also won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles and Smith-Cayda Weiss 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 doubles.
Meester (6-4, 6-3) and Weiss-Smith (6-3, 6-3) each had wins against Lincoln. The Arrows are now 6-3 on the season.
Aberdeen Roncalli notched a 7-2 dual win over Milbank, getting singles wins from River Haskell (6-4, 4-6, 11-9 tiebreaker at No. 2), Raley Haskel (6-0, 6-0 at No. 3), Keira Rivett (6-3, 6-2 at No. 4) and Gianna Cihak (6-0,6-4) at No. 6. Katherine Kretchman-Raley Haskell (6-2, 6-2 at No. 1), River Haskell-Rivett (6-1, 6-1 at No. 2) and Josie Mitzel (6-1, 4-6, 10-5 tiebreaker at No. 3) helped the Cavaliers sweep in doubles.
Milbank’s Bryan Meyer (boys 4,000-meter run, 13:54.51) and Great Plains Lutheran’s Katherine Prahl (girls 4,000, 16:53.54) won their respective races in the Milbank “Breathe Easy” Meet on Tuesday at the Whetstone Creek Golf Course. Webster Area, Sisseton, Waubay-Summit and Tri-State runners also competed.
In the Redhawk Run hosted by Estelline-Hendricks on Tuesday at Hendricks (Minn.), Cooper Schaefer of Estelline-Hendricks (boys 5,000, 17:32.9) and Jaycee Hourigan of Deuel (girls 4,000, 20:00.89).
In the North Central Invite at Bowdle on Saturday, Avery Wells of North Central (boys 4,000, 13:28.23) and Herreid-Selby Area’s Jentry Hubner (girls 4,000, 16:38.61) each won races.
Watertown and Aberdeen Central’s competitive spirit teams kicked off their seasons in the Hub City Invite at Aberdeen on Saturday.
Host Aberdeen Central and Harrisburg tied for first in the dance division with a 252.2 score. Watertown was 11th (205.75).
Harrisburg won the cheer division at 285.5. Watertown was third (261.5) and Aberdeen Central ninth (196.5).
