There are racehorses who are born champions. Starting Thursday you can watch online the birth of three.
The Pennsylvania Horse Racing Association is offering people a unique look into the foaling season this March and April with assistance from Delaware Valley University in Bucks County.
The Sydney J. Markovitz Equine Breeding Center on the Doylestown Township campus is the current home for three pregnant mares who are expected to give birth next month to the next generation of prize-winning horses.
In anticipation of the event, the association will operate a 24/7 live-stream “Foal cams” in the stables that will document the daily interactions and experiences starting Thursday through April 7.
Live foaling season updates will be shared on the PHRA’s Facebook and Instagram.
The association has been doing the live streams during foaling season since 2019 to educate the public on foaling season and horse racing, according to spokeswoman London Faust.
The streams will feature a real-time, uninterrupted look at the thoroughbred and standardbred mares as they prepare for the arrival of their foals.
The expected foals have some pretty impressive parentage.
The foals — which ultrasounds predict are all colts, meaning males — aren’t named until they are born, Faust said. The DelVal Advanced Equine Reproduction class picks a theme for the names and this year it’s mountain ranges — think Rainier, Denali, Atlas and Karakoram.
DelVal’s Equine Science and Management students work with full-time faculty and a stable manager to receive hands-on experience in daily management of the breeding center including assisting with foaling and breeding procedures.
The foals will remain at the Markovitz center until November 2026 when they are sold as yearlings (one-year-olds) during an annual sale at the Harrisburg Farm Show Complex. They start training for racing as two-year-olds, Faust said.
