Who said you can’t golf in the snow?
LIV golfer Bubba Watson, who hails from Bagdad, near Milton, certainly didn’t say that. During the historic snow storm that brought up to 10 inches to the Pensacola area on Tuesday, with snow lasting throughout the week as it melted away, Watson, in a post on Facebook, said he was “trying to give -1 another meaning in Pensacola, Florida!”
Typically, in Watson’s world, that would refer to a one-under par round of golf. But last week – a little exaggerated of course, but not by all that much – one-under meant the absolute frigid temperatures that hit Northwest Florida and most of the southeastern United States last week. It reached a low of 18 degrees, turning melting snow to ice and shutting down the city.
In a reel posted on social media, Watson – in a black RangeGoats GC T-shirt from the LIV tour (the team that he’s a captain of) and, surprisingly enough, black shorts – peered ahead as he looked toward his off-screen caddie and said, “This looks like about a 9-iron,” before being handed the club.
Like he was taking a shot out of the bunker, Watson proceeded to hit the yellow golf ball out of the snow and immediately said, “Oh, that’s a good one.”
“That’s a good one, Daddy!” his daughter, Dakota – who wound up being the off-screen caddie – yelled in excitement.
“Yeah, it is! Let’s do some snow angels!” Watson replied, and the pair immediately fell to the ground to do just that. They joined in on much of Northwest Florida’s enjoyment from this past week. as many residents embraced their inner child.
This isn’t the first time his daughter has helped him on the course, either. Dakota was her Dad’s caddie at the Masters Par-3 Tournament last April in Augusta, Georgia. She stole the show, too, sinking some incredible putts throughout the day. “Imagine if I had Dakota’s putting,” Watson posted on X, formerly Twitter, after the round.
Watson, 46, who left the PGA Tour in 2022 for the LIV Golf League, didn’t play in 2023 after recovering from an injury, but returned to action last season. He captains a LIV team that features other notable golfers such as Peter Uihlein, Matt Wolff and Ben Campbell.
