A dream came true for Madison Keys at the Australian Open as she ended years of heartache by winning her maiden Grand Slam title at the age of 29.
Keys defied the odds to dump out the top two players in world tennis in Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek as well as Danielle Collins and Elena Rybakina.
Jessica Pegula has lauded Keys recently following her first Grand Slam crown. The player richly deserves her plaudits and is a very likeable player on the WTA Tour.
It’s been a year of firsts for Keys and she will now be looking forward to getting back out on the court after taking some time out of the game to let her body recover after Australian Open glory.
With Indian Wells set to get underway in California this week, Keys has been back out on the practice court and it would appear that she’s in fine fettle ahead of the next event.
The 30-year-old will be hoping to prove that her Grand Slam win isn’t a flash in the pan. Having reached one other final, Keys will want this to become the norm and Indian Wells is a great chance for another crown.
It would appear as though Keys is going to go into this tournament in decent shape. She’s been spotted on social media playing some intense practice points with Rybakina with both players likely to benefit.
Keys might take some time to settle back into match situations when she starts her campaign at Indian Wells with her first opponent yet to be decided ahead of the tournament.
Looking at her in practice, it would appear she’s got back on the bike pretty quickly. Rybakina gave her a tough examination but the pair exchanged some solid rallies and produced some brilliant winners.
It was a lovely moment watching on as Keys claimed glory at the Australian Open, with the women currently operating in a supremely competitive environment on the circuit at the moment.
Several players turn up to tournaments hoping to win, and there isn’t really a female who is currently dominating on a regular basis, and that should give Keys hope for the future.
Keys shot to her best WTA ranking of her career by winning in Melbourne. She’s now the fifth ranked player in world tennis and having that under her belt should give her big incentive to kick on even further.
Keys has now won 10 career titles playing singles tournaments and if she finds her best form at Indian Wells, there won’t be many betting against that number becoming 11.
