The Los Angeles Lakers broke the internet on Sunday by trading Anthony Davis to the Dallas Mavericks for Luka Doncic in a groundbreaking three-team deal including the Utah Jazz.
However, the Golden State Warriors could top the Lakers’ blockbuster trade by completing a shocking deal for a six-time NBA champion duo.
“Sources say the most ambitious idea being tossed around among Golden State’s decision-makers: Is there any feasible pathway for the Warriors to pull off the dreamiest of outcomes and find a way to bring both (LeBron) James and (Kevin) Durant to The Bay,” The Stein Line’s Jake Fischer wrote Monday.
“That would require quite the masterstroke. And while pulling that off currently stands as very unlikely, both from a salary-matching and asset valuation standpoint, this is the sort of big-game hunting that has defined these Warriors.”
Durant has already teamed up with Curry in the Bay and succeeded under Steve Kerr, winning two championships between 2016 and 2019.
On the other hand, James hasn’t had an opportunity to play with arguably the best shooter of all time in an official NBA contest.
That said, James, a four-time NBA champion, has been on the right side of Curry’s magical offensive performances in NBA All-Star contests and the Olympics.
Although they’re aging superstars, a trio composed of Curry, Durant, and James would undoubtedly be box-office material.
Curry’s gifted long-range shooting, Durant’s textbook hesitation pull-up jumpers over outstretched arms, and James’ forceful offensive approach combined with his advanced distribution skills would help cheer up disappointed Warriors fans.
However, the organization may pursue more realistic targets, considering it would be forced to mortgage its future to land James and Durant.
Still, it’s fun to envision the Warriors one-upping the Lakers before the Feb. 6 trade deadline.
