WACO, Texas (KWTX) – The Texas Sports Hall of Fame hosted its annual Lone Star Luncheon on Thursday, November 7, with guest speaker Verne Lundquist.
Lundquist was a long-time sportscaster who covered the NFL, College Football, March Madness, The Masters Tournament and much more from 1967 until his retirement earlier this year.
Lundquist used his time at the Luncheon to share stories from his time in the booth and reflect on some of his most iconic calls. One of the most memorable being when he was in the booth for the 2013 Iron Bowl where Auburn defeated Alabama in the final seconds by way of a 106-yard kick return for a touchdown.
Lundquist calls himself a storyteller, and he kept that in mind before every broadcast.
“The reason you tell stories about people or teams or sports is to give people a reason to watch,” Lundquist said.
Lundquist provided some words of wisdom for younger people wanting to be sportscasters. He encouraged them to learn as much as they can from those who have come before them.
“Watch a lot of video tape from people you admire and borrow liberally,” Lundquist said. “The reason that they are successful is that they have done something well”
This is the fifth edition in the Lone Star Luncheon series. Previous speakers include Joe Greene, Lee Trevino, Roger Clemons and members of the 2023 World Series Champion Texas Rangers.
