Big-time golf is coming back to the state of Wisconsin.
The United States Golf Association announced Tuesday that it will stage three tournaments — the 2028 U.S. Amateur Open, the 2033 U.S. Junior Amateur and the 2037 U.S. Girls’ Amateur — at Whistling Straits, located on the Lake Michigan shore roughly an hour north of Milwaukee.
“The USGA is excited to reignite our commitment with Kohler, and look forward to a long and fulfilling relationship,” USGA managing director, Championships Mark Hill, said in a statement. “Whistling Straits is renowned for its performance on an international stage, and we know it will challenge and thoroughly impress the world’s best amateur players.”
The course, owned and operated by the Kohler Co., has previously hosted three majors: the PGA Championship in 2004, 2010 and 2015 and most recently, the Ryder Cup in 2021 as well as the 2007 U.S. Senior Open.
Another nearby Kohler-owned course, Blackwolf Run, played host to the U.S. Women’s Opens in 1998 and 2012.
“We are pleased to partner with the USGA to bring these prestigious golf championships to Whistling Straits, building on our legacy of hosting memorable and record-breaking events,” said Dirk Willis, vice president – Golf, Landscape & Retail. “Amateur golf is the heart of the game, while junior golf helps fuel the next generation of passionate players, and it’s a great honor to host these elite men and women over the next 10 years. We look forward to showcasing their incredible talent in front of our proud Wisconsin golf fans and providing a world-class golf experiences for all involved.”
The USGA has staged a number of tournaments in Wisconsin over the past two decades, most notably in 2017 when the U.S. Open was played at Erin Hills, which hosted the 2011 U.S. Amateur and will also host the U.S. Women’s Open in 2025.
In addition to the three events announced for Whistling Straits, the USGA has four other championship events scheduled to be held in Wisconsin: the 2026 U.S. Mid-Amateur, 2029 U.S. Junior Amateur, 2030 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur and 2034 U.S. Girls’ Junior, all of which will be played at Sand Valley Resort near Nekoosa, in north-central Wisconsin.
