CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – Weather-related issues like Tropical Storm Debby, coupled with global technical problems have made for a turbulent summer travel season.
Delays and cancellations have led many travelers to inquire about their rights and the questions they should be asking at the airport.
When it comes to delays, a flyer’s rights all depend on whether the delay is considered significant. Under federal law, a three-hour delay for domestic flights and a six-hour delay for international flights is considered significant. In those instances, flyers are entitled to a full cash refund, or an option to rebook at no additional cost.
As for cancellations, the Department of Transportation also requires all airlines to offer a full cash refund or option to rebook.
If a delay or cancellation is considered controllable, or within the airline’s control, travelers could be entitled to additional compensation. Examples would be anything caused by the airline such as maintenance or crew issues, or the recent global tech outage.
Experts suggest visiting the USDOT online to figure out what individuals are eligible to receive. Oftentimes people are guaranteed things like a meal voucher or complimentary hotel accommodations.
It is worth noting that weather-related disruptions are considered uncontrollable, meaning passengers have fewer options at their disposal.
Katy Nastro, a spokesperson for Going, a flight deals company, suggested flyers keep all travel-related receipts in the event any expenses can be reimbursed. She also recommended checking what travel disruption coverage is offered through credit cards.
“Take out the credit card that you use to pay for your trip with, because a lot of times these travel credit cards will actually have you know, flight disruption insurances built in that will reimburse you even faster than the airlines would,” Nastro said. “It takes not even a moment to take out your credit card and see what you’re already entitled to.”
Nastro also said that booking an early-morning, nonstop flight gives travelers the best odds of arriving on time. Avoiding checked bags can also help, if possible.
