An offensive explosion helped UConn women’s basketball crush the Villanova Wildcats 100-57 on Wednesday night at Gampel Pavilion.
The Huskies hit the 100-point mark for the second time this season and shot 65.6 percent from the field. They would’ve put up even bigger numbers had their stars not sat for the entire fourth quarter, too.
Sarah Strong led the team with 22 points on 8-10 shooting to go along with five assists and four rebounds while Paige Bueckers nearly recorded a triple-double with 21 points, nine assists and eight rebounds. Meanwhile, Kaitlyn Chen put up 17 points — her highest total in a UConn uniform. Ironically, her career-best of 31 points also came against Villanova back on Dec. 11, 2023.
Aubrey Griffin played nine minutes in her second game back from a torn ACL.
Villanova scored the game’s opening point, which proved to be the high point of its day. From there, UConn scored the next 12 points over a span of 2:14, then followed it up with another 10-0 run after the Wildcats pulled back within three. By the end of the first quarter, the Huskies’ lead ballooned to 31-15.
While UConn’s defense had its lapses, the offense scored at will — during one stretch, the Huskies accounted for 19 of 20 points. At the half, they were shooting 70.0 percent and led by 36.
Out of the break, Villanova didn’t show much fight. UConn pushed the gap over 40 points by the end of the third quarter and came away with a 43-point victory. The Huskies have won their last two games by a combined 103 points.
With the win, UConn improves to 18-2 on the season and 9-0 in Big East play. Next up, the Huskies will hit the road to take on the Creighton Bluejays, who are also undefeated in conference play at 8-0. Tip-off is set for Saturday at 5:30 p.m. ET on Fox.
