Four tournaments are in the books with one left to play.
The Bruins are heading to their final match of the fall season.
After a below-average weekend in Palo Alto, California, UCLA women’s golf will travel to Atlanta, Georgia for the three-day East Lake Cup at East Lake Golf Club beginning Monday.
The team is coming off a tie for 13th place at the Stanford Intercollegiate, a stark contrast from its previous finishes this season. In their first three tournaments of the year, the Bruins had placed in the top 10 thrice.
At Stanford, however, UCLA was missing two of its regular starters: seniors Zoe Antoinette Campos and Caroline Canales.
Both Campos and Canales were absent due to the 2024 LPGA Q-Series, where they are both looking for a spot on the LPGA Tour. The Q-Series is taking place in Venice, Florida, and was postponed due to the hurricane.
Due to this postponement, both Campos and Canales will fly from Florida to Georgia on Saturday for the East Lake Cup.
“We go straight from this [Q-Series], but I think I’m just going to do my best, once I get there, to rest my body and recover,” Campos said. “I’m just looking forward to it and being with the team and just having another tournament for the fall.”
Despite their quick turnaround, Campos and Canales will get a chance to practice on the course on Sunday.
Canales said this back-to-back play may be beneficial anyway.
“I think being in Florida this week is probably going to help us at East Lake because we’re putting the same type of greens that they’re going to have at East Lake; this Bermuda, kind of grainy greens that we don’t really see a lot in California,” Canales said.
While Campos and Canales are in Florida, the other three starting players are in Westwood.
“For the girls at home, each one of them has different things we’re going to work on – mostly ball striking and accuracy – and then just keeping our short games and putting sharp,” said coach Alicia Um Holmes.
Seniors Tiffany Le and Natalie Vo, as well as freshman Francesca Fiorellini, will join Campos and Canales as the starting five for the tournament.
UCLA last played in the East Lake Cup two years ago. While there are some members that will be playing the course for the first time, both Campos and Canales are already familiar.
“I know the holes pretty well,” Campos said. “I definitely have some notes from before, where the good spots are, but definitely it’s nice to have played before, and I’m sure it’ll help going into next week.”
