Tyler ISD plans for new golf training facility

TYLER, Texas (KLTV) – A golf training facility for Tyler ISD is coming soon according to officials on Monday.

Superintendent Dr. Marty Crawford said the facility is still in the planning stages.

“Right now, we are in the process of preparing to receive bids to see what possibility exist for a golf practice facility,” said Crawford.

Tyler is home to some great golf courses like Hollytree, Willowbrook, and the Cascades, however tee times and range times are becoming fewer as golf memberships and player traffic has increased.

“As we provide facilities for all UIL athletics programs, we want to make sure the opportunity for success exists for our golfers as well,” Crawford said. “Those that don’t have memberships and even those that do, due to the clubs’ facility availability.”

To fund the project, Tyler ISD will be utilizing a similar strategy used when they renovated Rose Stadium or built the outdoor Aquatics Center, or convert Mike Carter Field to synthetic: capital improvement tucked away in fund balance resulting from the conservative management of annual budgets.

“The district does not practice using debt to fund central district athletics facilities,” said Crawford. “A common standard practiced since Rose Stadium saw it’s first synthetic surface in 2001.”

According to a permit filed with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, construction on the project could start as early as September of this year, with completion estimated for May 3, 2025. The total estimated cost is $3,000,000.
