Stefanos Tsitsipas’ former physiotherapist has opened up on the tennis star’s relationship with his former coach, his father Apostolos.
Last month Tsitsipas parted ways with is father and claimed he hadn’t been very smart in handling some situations.
The two have had a tense relationship as coach and player, with the 26-year-old telling his father to shut up during his second-round victory over Daniel Altmaier at the French Open earlier this year.
He then tore into him following his loss at the Canadian Open and announced their split shortly after.
In 2022 he made headlines after publicly calling Apostolos a “malaka”.
He has since expressed his regret for his outburst and said he preferred to keep their relationship stay as father and son.
However in a recent interview with L’Equipe, the top ranked Greek player’s former physiotherapist Jerome Bianchi alleged they have a “harmful” relationship.
“Their relationship has not been sustainable for years, their way of operating is harmful,” he said.
Bianchi then suggested that other players stopped training with Tsitsipas because his father is a “chatterbox” who “wants to take up all the space and leaves him zero oxygen”.
He also spoke about the impact Tsitsipas’ mother had on the coaching relationship.
“Every time Stefanos wanted to break up with his father, his mother ran and said, ‘You can’t do this to him, he dedicated his life to you’. And he found himself feeling guilty.”
The healthcare professional said he is “sad” for the player because he has “the greatest physical qualities” but has not lived up to his potential.
“He realises that he is getting on in age and that his career has not been what it should have been.”
Tsitsipas is currently ranked No.11 in the world, but was once ranked world No.3, making him the highest ranked male Greek player ever.
Many consider him to be one of the best current players to not have won a Grand Slam yet.
Three years ago, he lost to Novak Djokovic in the French Open final after throwing away a two-set advantage and was defeated by the Serbian in a second Grand Slam final at last year’s Australian Open.
