KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – As you work through your holiday shopping list, police have a serious warning.
The Sevierville Police Department said it sees more purse and car thefts this time of year.
East Tennessee Valley Crime Stoppers Executive Director Stacey Payne had some tips on how to prevent thefts this holiday season.
Payne said that while you’re out shopping during the holiday season, “So are criminals. The difference is they’re shopping by looking through our windows.”
Payne also said a lot of thefts that happen during this time of year take place in store parking lots, which are crimes of opportunity.
“Out of sight, out of mind is something we need to practice, not just at the holiday season, but all year round,” Payne said.
Payne said to make sure when you’re out and about to lock your doors and be aware of your surroundings as you go in and out of stores.
“When we’re out shopping, let’s say we’ve found a great bargain and we want to take this group and put them in the car, then go back for round two. The problem is someone may be watching you in that parking lot,” Payne said. “Instead, drop them off in your car, and I know it’s a pain, but go to another parking space.”
As for handbag thefts, there are things you can do to reduce your chances of being a victim.
“We want to make sure that we’re keeping our purse close to us, that it’s not being left open, and we limit what we’re carrying,” Payne said.
Payne said it’s a good idea to keep your bag on you and to not drop it in a shopping cart. Additionally, keep cash out of view and reduce the number of credit cards you’re carrying on the chance your wallet is stolen.
“How many credit cards are you carrying? I’ve taken reports throughout the years where somebody will give me a list of 5, 6, 7, 8 different credit cards that have now been stolen that they’re having to deal with,” Payne said.
To take extra precautions, try to get most of your shopping done in the daylight or when plenty of people are around.
If you have information about a crime you would like to report, contact East Tennessee Valley Crime Stoppers at 865-215-7165.
