GLENDALE, AZ (AZFamily) — Liam Stevens started golfing about a year ago. “I started working at a country club,” he said. “It made me want to golf more and get better.”
He decided to get fitted for golf clubs. It takes a lot of swings and some high-tech equipment to come up with the best club options.
According to a recent report by Golf Datatech, spending on golf equipment has increased ‘significantly’ since 2019, and custom fitting has become a major factor in equipment purchases.
“Custom-fitting specialists are now a significant channel for purchasing premium golf clubs,” the report said.
“I hear, ‘Should I take lessons or get a fitting?’” said Club Champion’s Jesus Martinez. “My answer to them is both. If you have golf clubs that are not right for you, a lot of times it’s hand me downs, these clubs end up being from experienced golfers so they’re a little too stiff, they’re a little too heavy. Well, that new golfer is going to start to learn bad habits.”
Club Champion builds custom clubs using dozens of brands. “A full bag you could probably get it as inexpensive as $3,000, but it could go well over $12,000, so there’s a huge range,” Martinez said.
Fitting appointments cost $100 to $400. There are discounts if you purchase clubs. Because it’s a significant investment, it’s important to make the most out of your appointment.
“It’s like you’re going to go on a round of golf, so bring your golf shoes, bring your golf glove. Bring your golf clubs,” Martinez said. “You’re going to see numbers, so it’s very normal for you to want to swing harder or swing less or whatever. No. We want you to do what you normally do. That’s the whole idea.”
The most popular club fitting is for the driver. For that club, an appointment will last about an hour.
“The shaft to us is 60% of the golf club, so it’s the most important part,” Martinez said. “During our process, we’re going to figure out which golf shaft is the best for you. Once we’ve figured that out, we’re going to try about three to five different head types that we believe is going to improve that performance with the club.”
You’ll see how all of it compares to your old driver. You can get a putter perfected for you, too, as Jan Kinney did.
“You putt so many times in a game, you can always get better,” she said.
