SOUTH BURLINGTON — In the third period of Monday’s game, Hartford High School girls hockey star Madison Barwood controlled the puck behind Champlain Valley/Mount Mansfield’s net. The senior fed her teammate Emma Bazin for a slap-shot goal just inside the far post for the lone goal in a 1-0 victory.

That assist marked point No. 150 in Barwood’s hockey career as she continues to improve her school record mark.

The senior broke the previous record that had stood for around 20 years against Woodstock on Dec. 20 with an assist.

“My whole team knew I needed three (points) and then after getting that third one they all joined around and congratulated me,” Barwood said.

Setting hockey records is a familiar feeling for Barwood. She already owns the field hockey program’s all-time scoring mark. Barwood has been on the ice hockey team since she was in eighth grade, but needed only four seasons to set the mark on the grass.

On the pitch, she broke Hartford’s single-season goal record twice (32 goals in 2023 and 37 in 2024). Over the course of her four-year career, Barwood accumulated over 100 goals and 100 points, becoming the first Hurricane to achieve those milestones.

Field hockey is the sport Barwood is going to pursue in college.

“Nobody has ever done 100 points or 100 goals so it’s cool to be the first one,” Barwood said of her field hockey records.

According to Barwood’s father, Justin, who is an assistant coach on the girls hockey team, ice hockey is Madison’s third-best sport. She’s also a star on the girls lacrosse team and is closing in on the school record for those as well. In lacrosse, Madison Barwood has tallied 138 goals, 65 assists and 203 points in three seasons.

“The fact that she’s good at all these sports helps her be good at the other sports,” Justin Barwood said. “Just her understanding of spacing between lacrosse, ice hockey and field hockey, she has constantly gotten better.”

Madison Barwood’s individual contributions have helped Hartford rack up state championship trophies. The senior was a member of the 2023 D-II championship girls hockey team, won the last two D-II field hockey state championships and member of the girls lacrosse team that won the D-II championship in 2022.

“She’s a pretty humble kid,” Justin Barwood said. “I think she’s more about team and about winning, so some of those accomplishments are just the fact that she’s been fortunate to play on really good teams and playing with really good players.”
