Everyone wants to hit the ball farther, but actually gaining those yards is a much tougher task. What’s the best way to tap into your natural power? Gia Liwski, a teaching professional at Fiddlers Elbow CC in a Bedminster, N.J., has a simple drill to help.
In a video posted to the LPGA Professionals YouTube page, Liwski explained that recreational players tend to let their power leak when they allow their arms to become disconnected from their torso during the swing. Instead, it’s important to groove the feel of maintaining a connected feeling from start to finish.

To practice this, Liwski suggests a drill with a shorter, like an 8-iron.
“Grip down to the bottom of the grip, just above the shaft,” Liwski says. “Put both hands on the club. Good posture. Swing and point the club towards my intended target. The left arm is gonna be attached to my chest.”
Liwski devotes special attention to the left arm position here, because it’s the key to the drill.
“The left arm is still on my chest,” she says. “Once I go to turn to deliver the club, that’s where the power is gonna come from.”
Liwski noted that recreational players often let their arm disconnect during the swing, and the attempt at reconnection is where things can go awry quickly.
“That’s when inconsistencies start,” she says.
To harness your power, Liwski recommends teeing up a ball and thinking about keeping that left arm close to your chest.
Then all you have to do is swing, turn through, and bomb it. It’s that simple!
