I filmed a social media skit last year where I’m walking around opening doors, fridges, and cupboards – even lifting up a toilet seat – with each of them revealing a Hyrox event going on inside. Obviously, it was just a laugh, but the fact that so many people shared it speaks to the undeniable – and even comical – ubiquity of the fitness racing event.
It feels like Hyrox is everywhere, but just how much money is the German-based brand bringing in? We now have an insight into just how big that number could be.
Speaking on the Biz of Sport podcast, Hyrox co-founder Moritz Fürste broke down the numbers heading into the 2025 season. ‘This year it’s going to be 83 events and the scale is 3 event days. So 83 events at the moment delivers 170–175 event days of Hyrox racing.’
While it’s difficult to pin down the average number of competitors per race day, they are projecting that 650,000 athletes will compete in 2025. As for cost, Fürste added, ‘On average, I would say it’s, globally speaking, €130 per person.’
Some quick maths tells you that this means Hyrox is projecting a gross revenue of around €84,500,000, or just under £70m, from race ticket sales alone in 2025. This is before factoring in spectator tickets and licensing fees – no doubt a huge revenue stream for Hyrox, with over 5,000 gyms worldwide paying around £100 or more each month to be affiliated with the brand.
While these figures are based on projections, and it isn’t clear what profit margin can be expected from these gross numbers, it’s safe to say that Hyrox is in a very strong financial position. Some business-minded commenters on social media predict that the brand could be operating with as much as a 70% profit margin, potentially giving them a pre-tax income of at least £49m.
When asked how Hyrox determined ticket pricing, Fürste commented that they used marathons and similar events as benchmarks. ‘It’s funny, because apparently the price point in sports is, to a certain degree, determined by the amount of time that it takes you. A marathon that takes you an average of 5 hours or whatever is particularly more expensive than a half marathon. So we looked at half marathons because our average time is like [1 hour 30 minutes].’
He also added that location is a factor in ticket prices. When asked where Hyrox charges the most and the least, Fürste answered, ‘I would say the most probably US, and the least Eastern Europe, Spain, India.’
While most commenters on an Instagram clip from the podcast were simply in awe of the numbers, some questioned the use of volunteer judges – a pivotal part of Hyrox’s structure – given the company’s profitability. However, others quickly pointed out that judges receive race tickets, which are arguably more valuable to Hyrox enthusiasts.
