Police were looking on Friday for a man who stole a shopping cart from an 85-year-old woman in the Bronx that contained more than $40,000 in cashier’s checks and other valuables, according to the NYPD.
Police officials said the woman was crossing Marion Avenue and East 195th Street with the cart around noon on Wednesday when the man came up and snatched it.
The cart contained an iPhone, several debit and credit cards, and about $40,000 in cashier’s checks, the NYPD said.
The man fled on foot down East 195th Street, and the woman was not injured, according to police.
NYPD officials said they were still investigating the theft, and released surveillance footage of the man they were seeking in connection with it.
Incidents of grand larceny — the charge applied to thefts of items worth more than $1,000 — have been ticking up for several years in the NYPD’s 52nd precinct, which includes neighborhoods in the north Bronx like Kingsbridge, Fordham and University Heights.
There were 880 grand larceny incidents in the precinct last year, up 20% from 2023, police data shows. So far this year, there have been about 55 incidents, which is roughly level with the amount by the same point last year.
Police were asking anyone with information about the suspect to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or, for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). Members of the public can also submit tips online.
