While speaking about their two forthcoming Netflix series, Ross Duffer and Matt Duffer, better known as The Duffer Brothers, talked about how the hit Netflix show they created, Stranger Things, influences their new projects. Per Deadline, The Duffer Brothers spoke about their two new Netflix shows, The Boroughs and Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen, at the streamer’s Next on Netflix presentation held at the end of January.
The Boroughs was first billed by Netflix as “Stranger Things at a retirement home,” but has since walked back that description. The Duffers, did hint that characters in The Boroughs will, in fact, be dealing with something “otherworldly evil” like the characters in Stranger Things.
Netflix’s official description of The Boroughs reads: “The series takes place in a seemingly picturesque retirement community in the New Mexico desert, where a group of – you guessed it – unlikely heroes must band together to stop an otherworldly threat from stealing the one thing they don’t have: time.”
Matt Duffer added, “Only unlike Stranger Things, it’s set in a retirement community, so that’s something different. This time our misfits are a little on the older side. They ride golf carts, not bikes.” The series is created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews and comes from The Duffer Brothers Upside Down Pictures. “It stars Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, Bill Pullman, and a host of other screen icons we’re obsessed with. We’ve seen the first three episodes, and we’re really pumped with it. It’s fun, scary, and touching, too, and we can’t wait for you to see it,” he added.

Ross Duffer also touched on Something Very Bad is Going to Happen, which he said is a series that “follows a bride and groom in a chaotic, anxiety-filled week leading up to their wedding. It dives into the horror and dread that often comes with making a lifelong commitment to someone – something that anyone who’s ever been in a relationship can definitely relate to. We don’t want to say much more about the story yet – but the title is accurate. Bad things do happen,” he said.
Something Bad Is Going to Happen was created by Haley Z. Boston, who at 29 is running her first show as executive producer. “This is her first show, and she is a major new talent, we think, as are the stars of the show – Camila Monroe and Adam DiMarco – and the director Weronika Tofilska, who recently directed a little show you may have heard of called Baby Reindeer, you should check it out,” Matt Duffer said.
