The childhood coach of the Williams sisters’ Rick Macci has predicted that Carlos Alcaraz will return to World No. 1 position after his quarterfinal loss to Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open 2025. Alcaraz reached the No. 1 spot after winning the US Open in 2022 but in 2023, Novak Djokovic leapfrogged him. Come 2024, the Serbian was dethroned from the No. 1 spot by Jannik Sinner.
What did Williams sisters’ ex-coach Rick Macci say about Carlos Alcaraz?
Rick Macci had coached both Serena and Venus during their childhood years. He took to his X account (formerly known as Twitter) and said that it was all about showing mental strength for the Spaniard. If he remains to stay mentally strong, then Alcaraz will once again retake the No. 1 spot in the ATP Rankings.
The rest of year will give us a better inner snapshot of the mental strength and overall glue in his game and for the Spanish Magician to grab a few Slams and regain his Pole position. @carlosalcaraz, Macci wrote.
Carlos Alcaraz had a great start to the recently concluded Australian Open 2025 and just lost one set on his way to reach the quarterfinals. However, a strong opponent in the form of Novak Djokovic took on Alcaraz in the quarterfinal and got the best of the 21-year-old. Djokovic, who looked in pain during the whole match outplayed the Spaniard in just four sets.
But, it was ultimately Jannik Sinner who defended his Australian Open title.
Ex-coach of Serena Williams Patrick Mouratoglou on Jannik Sinner
The legendary French coach, Patrick Mouratoglou who guided Serena Williams to 10 of her 23 Major titles, recently shared his views that there is very little that separates Sinner and Alcaraz. As per Mouratoglou, Sinner is deserving of the No. 1 spot but he always finds it tough against Carlos Alcaraz.
Jannik is not above everyone. I don’t think he is above Carlos. I think when Carlos is at his best, there is a real match and I’m not sure who’s gonna win. Nobody can say who’s gonna win. And all their matches have been extremely close, extremely uncertain, and Carlos won some big ones against him. So I wouldn’t say that he is above. I think those two players, him and Carlos, are above everyone else, Mouratoglou said in a video he posted on his Instagram.
Last year itself, Alcaraz managed to defeat Sinner on three different occasions. Firstly in the semifinals of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, then at the French Open and then in the finals of the China Open.
The next outing for Carlos Alcaraz is the upcoming 2025 ABN AMRO Open in Rotterdam. The event starts on February 3 and goes on till February 18.
