The numbers are in for the Watertown city golf course
WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) – The Thompson Park Golf Course is still losing Watertown money, but not as much as it did in its first season.
City Council went over the numbers Monday night.
The Watertown golf course lost the city about $260 thousand this past season, less than the more than $300 thousand it lost the city in 2023.
It was a rainy season, and the first summer local competitor, Ives Hill Country Club, was open.
Still, revenue was up by more than $14 thousand, the number of tournaments doubled, and 180 season passes were sold.
Some council members praised the progress, despite the controversy behind the city purchasing the golf course in early 2023.
“It does not help to talk about being negative because our staff need to know that they’re going to have a job. It’s not helpful or conducive for city employees when there’s constant negativity. I think this year there was a lot of less of that and it brought more people and more tournaments,” said Lisa Ruggiero.
The course is looking to make improvements for next season, including upgrades to its irrigation system.
